Private Cardiac Surgery FAQs | Mr Haris Bilal, Manchester
Private Cardiac Surgery with Mr Haris Bilal
How do I get a referral to Professor Bilal?
You can be referred by your GP or cardiologist, or you can contact The Alexandra Hospital directly to self-refer if you are self-paying or hold private medical insurance. Professor Bilal welcomes direct enquiries and is happy to arrange a prompt outpatient consultation.
Which insurers does Professor Bilal work with?
Professor Bilal is recognised by all major UK private medical insurers, including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, Cigna and others. Please contact the Alexandra Hospital to confirm your insurer’s coverage prior to your appointment.
What is OPCAB and why is it better?
OPCAB (Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass) is bypass surgery performed on a beating heart without using a heart-lung machine. This approach significantly reduces the risk of stroke, kidney injury, and memory/cognitive problems that can sometimes occur with conventional bypass surgery. It is particularly advantageous for elderly patients, those with diabetes, kidney disease, or previous stroke. Professor Bilal is one of the UK’s most experienced OPCAB surgeons.
How long will I be in hospital after bypass surgery?
Most patients who undergo coronary bypass surgery stay in hospital for 5–7 days. You will spend 1–2 days in the cardiac ICU and then move to a private room on the ward. Full recovery at home typically takes 6–8 weeks, though many patients feel significantly better within the first few weeks.
What happens at my first consultation?
Professor Bilal will review your medical history, examine you and discuss your symptoms and concerns. He will review any existing investigations (such as angiograms or echos) and arrange any further tests needed. He will explain your diagnosis and surgical options clearly, giving you time to ask questions. A plan will be agreed with you before any surgery is scheduled.
Can I be seen urgently?
Yes. Professor Bilal offers urgent consultations for patients who require prompt assessment. Please call The Alexandra Hospital and explain the urgency — the team will do their best to arrange a same-week or next-day appointment if needed.
Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
Please bring any relevant investigations (angiogram reports, echocardiograms, CT scans), your medication list, your GP referral letter, and your insurance details (if applicable). If you have previous clinic letters from a cardiologist, please bring those too.
What are the risks of cardiac surgery?
All surgical procedures carry some risk. Professor Bilal will discuss your individual risk profile with you in detail during your consultation, based on your age, medical conditions and the complexity of your operation. He uses validated risk calculators and will give you honest, personalised information to help you make an informed decision.
