Professor Bilal and his team are committed to making your experience as smooth and stress-free as possible, from your first enquiry through to your recovery. Here is what to expect at each stage.
Step 1 — Referral
You can be referred to Professor Bilal by your GP, cardiologist, or another specialist. Alternatively, you may refer yourself directly if you are self-paying. Simply contact The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle to request an appointment, or use the Contact Us page on this website.
Step 2 — Outpatient Consultation
You will meet Professor Bilal at The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle for a thorough consultation. He will review your medical history, examine you, and arrange any investigations needed — such as an echocardiogram, CT scan, coronary angiogram or blood tests. All major cardiac diagnostic services are available on-site at the Alexandra Hospital.
Step 3 — Planning Your Surgery
Once Professor Bilal has reviewed all your investigations, he will discuss the surgical options with you in detail — including the recommended procedure, the technique he plans to use, the expected benefits, and the risks. You will have ample time to ask questions. A written plan and information leaflet will be provided.
Step 4 — Pre-operative Assessment
Before your operation, you will attend a pre-operative assessment clinic where nursing staff will carry out health checks, confirm your medications, and answer any remaining questions. This is usually 1–2 weeks before your planned surgery date.
Step 5 — Surgery at The Alexandra Hospital
Your operation will be performed by Professor Bilal at The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle. The hospital has a dedicated cardiac surgical theatre and a specialist cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). Professor Bilal and his team will be with you throughout your stay.
Step 6 — Recovery & Follow-Up
After surgery, you will recover in the cardiac ICU before transferring to a private room on the cardiac ward. Most patients are discharged within 5–7 days following bypass or valve surgery. Professor Bilal provides close follow-up after discharge, with outpatient appointments to monitor your recovery and ensure you return to full health.
