Being told you need heart surgery is one of the most significant moments of a person’s life. It’s also one of the most important times to make sure you have all the information you need — and that means it’s perfectly reasonable, and often wise, to seek a second opinion.

Why Second Opinions Matter in Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac surgery is a major undertaking. The decision to operate — and which procedure to perform — is rarely black and white. There are often genuine alternatives, and the “best” approach can depend on surgeon experience, patient anatomy, and individual circumstances that vary from one specialist to another.

A second opinion is not a sign of distrust in your first surgeon. It is a sensible, normal part of making a fully informed decision about a serious procedure.

When Should You Consider a Second Opinion?

A second opinion is particularly valuable when:

  • You have been told you need bypass surgery (CABG) and want to understand if off-pump (OPCAB) techniques are suitable for you
  • You have been advised you need a valve replacement and want to explore whether repair is possible
  • Your surgery has been described as high-risk and you want a specialist’s view on risk mitigation
  • You were initially told surgery is not an option and want to explore whether that is truly the case
  • You simply want more time, more information, or more confidence before proceeding

What Happens in a Second Opinion Consultation?

Mr Haris Bilal offers dedicated second opinion consultations at The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, Manchester. In the consultation, he will:

  • Review all your existing investigation results — ECGs, echocardiograms, angiograms, CT scans
  • Take a full history and examine you
  • Give you his independent assessment of your diagnosis and the surgical options available
  • Explain in plain English what each option involves, its risks, and what recovery looks like
  • Answer any questions you or your family have

You will leave the consultation with a clear, written report that you can share with your GP, original consultant, or insurer.

Cost and Insurance

The second opinion consultation fee is £250. This is covered in full by most major private health insurers including BUPA, AXA, Aviva, and Cigna. Self-paying patients are also welcome. No GP referral is required — you can contact Mr Bilal’s secretary directly to arrange an appointment, often within days.
